I haven't read this book, "Midwife of the Blue Ridge" by Christine Blevins, although some of the reviews I have read make it sound promising. I just can't seem to get past the fact that she has been beheaded. Why, why, why, why why, I ask? It is beautiful cover art, otherwise. I'm sure the fact that I am a photographer (retired) has everything to do with it. Does this bother only me? Could the publisher not have left her with a forehead, eyes and nose as in the original illustration? The illustrator has a beautiful piece of art here. Would you want your child delivered, or other ills attended to, by a headless midwife? The majority of cover art on today's novels is crying out for mockery, so I beg you, publishers, having the top of the head on the rest of the head is good.

Don't blame the illustrator - the publisher controls what you see happening on book covers. If you pay attention to women's fiction you will see headless and faceless women abound.

Dear Mr./Ms. Anonymous, if in fact that is your real name: Yes, I had momentarily forgotten when gazing upon the beautiful cover that publishers have everything to do with everything, and I shall forthwith divert my snarkery to publishers. Notwithstanding, it is still an unattractive crop to a beautiful illustration and just plain looks stupid. Thank you for commenting.
I THOUGHT YOUR COMMENT WAS HYSTERICAL!!!! Loved it! I don't give 2 poops whose FAULT it was, the cover SUCKS! I guess they weren't targeting anyone with a brain when they designed AND accepted it.
